Fernando Carvalho, B.S. (Salem State University), M.A. (NTC)

‘The Universal Church of the Kingdom of God: A Critical Evaluation of a Brazilian Neo-Pentecostal Church in a UK Context’ (NTC), 2023.

Fernando’s thesis is concerned with exploring three interrelated issues:
1. The development of Brazilian Neo-Pentecostalism, including the socioeconomic and religious contexts in which the movement has flourished. 2. The beliefs, practices, and values of the IURD church (as global South’s possibly largest contemporary Christian export).
3. The elements/factors that make the IURDian ministries attractive to residents of Manchester.

Originally from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Fernando served as an MWRC volunteer and then as a Postgraduate Assistant from 2018 to 2022, helping with various administrative activities, including working in the library, as well as supporting events and other Manchester-based tasks. Fernando also volunteered for NTC's Marketing & Fundraising department, writing articles for social media and the College magazine.

His academic interests include Missiology (including diaspora mission and urban mission), Prosperity Gospel, Liberation Theology, and Practical Theology.
